We took the opportunity to sit down with Andy Chantrill, CTO of Betting Entertainment Ltd.
Our CTO plays a vital role in the company’s strategic plan and growth. In the interview he shares his visions on the IT department’s future, and reveals the key to both individual and team success.
How would you describe the IT Department at Betent?
The first thing to mention is that as an iGaming provider – rather than an operator – we’re focused on customer driven success, and this naturally demands fast development turnaround. We’ve had to become very good at multi-tasking and managing multiple projects at any one time – it sometimes reminds me of the famous EDS commercial with the engineers building a jetliner whilst in flight!
Within our department we have different teams – a backend team, a frontend team and a design team- and within each are specializations for different areas of our platform, for example Sportsbook which is built and managed in-house. One of our ambitions is to grow these “circles”, as I think of them.
We also encourage quite a lot of collaboration with stakeholders from other departments when planning new projects or figuring out ways to overcome obstacles. So I’d say there’s always something interesting or exciting going on in different corners of the office — the most lively corner of all usually has the Sportsbook Director sitting in it! [laughs]
Our team has also doubled in size over the last year, so we’re always learning and looking for ways to introduce new technologies or improve our working practices.
What advice would you give to people wanting to join the IT team at Betent?
To put it simply, we look for people who’ll help us advance the company mission I mentioned before, and this mostly comes down to loving what you do and being committed. I could give many examples of superstars in our company. We have employees on board who have grown into new roles and now have more challenging responsibilities, thanks to their strong commitment towards business objectives.
I’m also proud to say that we’re a very inclusive team with people from different countries, backgrounds, genders, and of all ages.
How can someone be successful in the team?
We’re very lucky to have an amazing Project Manager, so my best advice is simply to do exactly what she says! [laughs]
But seriously, being a good listener is vital in order to gain a clear understanding of the work – we love people who ask lots of questions! And being a good communicator will help you collaborate with others, which is especially important given the scale of our platform – no one person can possibly have coverage of it in its entirety.
Having said that, we have colleagues from different countries who’ve arrived with basic English at first.. and one thing I’ve learned is how easy it is to overcome those language barriers. I think companies that don’t appreciate this are missing out on recruiting talent.
What’s your vision for the IT Department moving forward?
Well, we’ve almost outgrown our office so we first need to knock down some walls! [laughs]
I’m really excited about some brand new products that we’ll be launching over the coming months, without going into detail, but they will form the new foundations of our company for the years ahead. It’s therefore a great opportunity to jump aboard and join our team now.
Looking back over the last year it’s amazing to see how far we’ve come, and I think the next 12 months will be even more exciting in different ways!
